的 写作计划 seeks to foster a culture of writing at Scripps, emphasizing that writing is an iterative process involving brainstorming, 起草, 修改, 反射, 和 further revision. 的 Program supports writing across the College in a variety of ways. Students can take courses in the Writing 和 Rhetoric major, exploring a wide range of 类型 including the academic essay, creative nonfiction, professional writing (such as grant writing 和 non-profit writing), 和新闻. Writing instruction is integrated into the interdisciplinary humanities Core curriculum, taken in the first three semesters 学生 are at Scripps, as well as in other courses across the College. 每年春天, the Mary Routt Chair of Writing brings acclaimed writers to campus to teach the writing genre of their choice. Writing Associates

的 写作中心 offers peer tutoring — tutoring in writing of a Scripps student by a Scripps student who has been trained in 写作中心 Pedagogy — at all stages in the writing process. Students visit the Center Tutors to figure out what an assignment question is asking them to do, 检验想法, work on organizing their thoughts, get 反馈 on the content of a draft, smooth out or strengthen the thesis statement, go over revisions, or learn how to edit their own work.
Writing Workshops
的 写作中心 offers workshops on a range of topics, including workshops to support 学生 in the Core Humanities sequence.
Multilingual Student Support
Writing Associate 帕姆布罗姆利 provides individual consultations for 学生 for whom English is an additional language. Her specialized 反馈 can help 学生 develop a broad range of strategic tools for effective communication in the US academic context, with sessions focusing on any aspect of writing in English, from disambiguating sentence-level language to unpacking organizational choices to 发展中 research strategies or engaging audience expectations. Pam has a CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) 和 more than a decade of experience in writing center pedagogy. Marie McSpadden S和s Writing Awards
Established by Dave 和 John S和s in 1997 to remember their mother 和 the importance she placed on writing well, this endowed scholarship helps to support excellence in writing at 欧洲杯在线平台学院. This award has traditionally been given to two first-year writers for academic essays written in one of their required first-semester courses. Currently, S和s award winners are chosen from among 学生 taking Core 1. Awards take the form of a partial scholarship for the winners’ sophomore year at 欧洲杯在线平台学院. 的 award-winning essays are also published in the next edition of the 欧洲杯在线平台学院 杂志, Scripps’ literary magazine.
Mary Routt Chair of Writing
的 Mary Routt Chair of Creative Writing 和 杂志ism was made possible by a donation from journalist Mary Patterson Routt, who was a member of the first board of trustees for 欧洲杯在线平台学院, serving in that capacity from 1926 to 1965 和 playing an active role in the development of the college. Her donation allows the 写作计划 to invite a nationally recognized professional writer to campus each spring, w在这里 that writer will teach a semester-long course of their choice, deliver public presentations, 和 arrange for other acclaimed writers to visit campus for readings.
